About 1221 that day, LtCdr Quirk also torpedoes and sinks INDUS MARU with unknown casualties. MATSUWA makes several counter-attacks dropping depth charges during and after the action, but without effect. In poor weather, MATSUWA rescues 1,648 survivors of the two marus. USS GAR evades and escapes.[1]
Author's Notes:
[1] It is acknowledged that the statement from a Japanese source that "MATSUWA rescues 1,648 survivors of the two marus" seems incredible for a kaibokan.
