MUROTSU MARU was completed during the war as the prototype type 2TEd standard merchant coastal motor tanker. 149 of these small tankers were built and used to deliver fuel between storage depots, refineries and coastal ports. Many Type 2TEs were lost in the Philippines, Borneo and Singapore areas. MUROTSU MARU survived the war. The Allies attempted to repair her for use as a repatriation vessel, but abandoned the attempt. Postwar, she was used as a commercial coastal tanker.
