AKIURA MARU was completed in 1938 as a cargo ship for Mitsubishi Shoji K. K., Tokyo. Her sister was KAZUURA MARU.

AKIURA MARU was requisiioned by the Imperial Army as a troop transport. In Feb '44, AKIURA MARU was torpedoed and sunk by USS BALAO (SS-285) NW of Manokwarki, New Guinea..

KAZUURA MARU was also completed in 1938 as a cargo ship for Mitsubishi and was requisiioned in Sep '41 by the Imperial Army as a troop transport. In Feb '45, KAZUURA MARU was converted and designated a hospital ship. She survived the war and was scrapped in 1976.
