Alaska Maru Class Transport

(ALASKA MARU, prewar)


ALASKA MARU was completed as a cargo ship in 1919 for the Osaka Shosen Kaisha (OSK Line), K. K., Kobe. Her sister was ATLAS MARU. ALASKA MARU's OSK service included their Japan ~ European, New York, India, West African and Persian Gulf routes. In Oct '41, she was requisitioned by the IJA and saw action in the invasions of Lingayen Gulf, Philippines ad the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). In Dec '43, ALASKA MARU was sunk off New Ireland by an American submarine.

ATLAS MARU was completed as a cargo ship in 1920 for the OSK Line. In Nov '44, ATLAS MARU was damaged by an American submarine and later sunk by a typhoon.
