Calcutta Maru Class Transport

(CALCUTTA MARU, prewar)


Completed as a passenger cargo ship in 1936 for Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line) K. K., Tokyo. Her sisters were MURORAN and BENGAL MARUs.

CALCUTTA MARU began her NYK service hauling cargo from Kobe to Calcutta. After the start of the Sino-Japanese War, she was requisitioned by the IJN and saw action in the invasion of Hainan. Later she was requisitioned by the Imperial Army and participated in landing troops on Java. CALCUTTA MARU was sunk in the East China Sea by an American submarine in May '42.
