Columbia Maru Class Transport

(COLUMBIA MARU, prewar)


COLUMBIA MARU was completed as a cargo ship in 1927 for Mitsubishi Shoji Kaisha. She was used to transport lumber from North America to Japan. In 1941, COLUMBIA MARU was requisitioned by the IJA and saw action in the invasion of Java. On 30 Nov '43, COLUMBIA MARU was sunk by an American submarine.

COLUMBIA MARU's sisters were OLYMPIA MARU and SHUNTEN MARU. In Sep '43, OLYMPIA MARU was sunk by an American submarine. In Nov '44, SHUNTEN MARU was bombed sunk by American planes in the S China Sea.
