HORAI MARU was completed as a passenger ship in 1912 for Australasian United Steam Navigation Co., Sydney, Australia.
In 1923, she was sold to Osaka Shosen and renamed HORAI MARU. She was requisitioned by the Imperial Army in 1941 In Feb 1942,
During the Battle of the Sunda Strait, HORAI MARU was torpedoed and sunk inadverently probably by IJN cruiser MOGAMI's and/or IJN destroyer FUBUKI
