Begining in 1937, conversions of four merchant ships, requisitioned from their owners by the IJN and one merchant ship requisitioned by the IJA, were carried out at Kawasaki's Kobe shipyard. These were KAMIKAWA, KIMIKAWA, KIYOKAWA, KUNIKAWA and HIROKAWA MARUs. KAMIKAWA MARU remained a seaplane carrier until her loss in '43, while KIYOKAWA, KIMIKAWA and KUNIKAWA MARUs were rerated as transports in '43. HIROKAWA MARU was requisitioned by the IJA in '41 and converted to a Boku Kikansen (anti-aircraft) vessel. HIROKAWA MARU was sunk in Nov '42 by American aircraft, land-based artillery and a USN destroyer.
