9 February 1939: Hainan Island Operation:
At midnight, a convoy under Vice Admiral (later Admiral) Kondo Nobutake’s Fifth Fleet, South China Naval Force, enters and anchors in Tsinghai Bay, northern Hainan Island. Kondo's forces include cruisers MYOYO (F), NAGARA and NATORI and eight destroyers that cover transports KOTOKU, KAGU, KATSURAGI, KINUGASA, and MANKO MARUs. Carrier AKAGI and seaplane tender CHIYODA provide air cover.
The invasion force lands Special Naval Landing Force (SNLF) troops in southern Hainan. In the next few days, IJN and IJA forces act together to subjugate the entire island.

Rabaul. Between 0515-0730, KOTOKU MARU replenishes mine
sweeper W-20 with water. From 0515-0730, loads W-20 with heavy oil and water.
Between 0700-0500, a harbor vessel comes alongside and loads bombs. From
0830-1120, destroyer HAKAZE comes alongside and loads heavy oil
and water. At 1300, auxiliary transport ship NANKAI MARU No. 2 comes alongside and electric welding is performed. Between 1635-0500, a harbor vessel comes alongside and loads and aviation fuel drums.
1 May 1942:
From 0630-0500, a harbor vessel comes alongside and loads aviation fuel drums. Between 1300-1600, auxiliary transport ship NANKAI MARU No. 2 comes alongside and loads 90 tons of water.
2 May 1942:
At 0600, auxiliary gunboat SHOEI MARU comes alongside and
loads a drum of aviation fuel and coal. At 0800, auxiliary transport NANKAI MARU
No. 2 loads drums. From 0925-0935, comes under air attack. Her 7.7 mm machine
gun fires 235 shots. Between 1245-1345, SHOEI MARU comes alongside and loads 100
tons of water.
3 May 1942:
Rabaul. From 0322-0330 KOTOKU MARU undergoes an air
attack. At 0800, SHOEI MARU comes alongside, then separates. Between 1300-1600,
KOTOKU MARU transfers coal to mine sweeper W-20. At 1430, KOTOKU MARU separates
from NANKAI MARU No. 2.
4 May 1942:
From 0630, a harbor vessel comes alongside and loads
aviation fuel drums. Between 0830-0920, transfers coal to mine sweeper W-20.
From 1015-1745, transfers coal to auxiliary transport ship NANKAI MARU No. 2.
Between 1430-1530 replenishes destroyer ASAKAZE with 27 tons of heavy oil.
5 May 1942:

loads materiel.
6 May 1942:

Lands materiel, lumber and aviation fuel drums ‘til 9 May.

Rabaul. Between 0830-0920, transfers coal to mine sweeper
W-20. From 1345-1600, a harbor vessel comes alongside and unloads cargo. Between
1500-1730, comes alongside destroyer HAKAZE and replenishes her with 235 tons of
heavy oil.
10 May 1942:
From 0600-1600, a harbor vessel comes alongside and
loads, materiel and aviation fuel drums
11 May 1942:
From 0600-1600, a harbor vessel comes alongside and loads
assorted goods, aviation fuel drums. Between 0900-1500 brings alongside and
transfers coal to auxiliary net layer NISSHO No. 5.

At 0700, comes alongside NANKAI MARU No. 2 and transfers

mine sweeper W-20. At 1630, WAYO MARU comes alongside.
15 May 1942:
Separates from WAYO MARU. From 0545-0755, transfers coal and heavy oil to salvage vessel OJIMA. Between 0630-1330, auxiliary gunboat NIKKA MARU comes alongside and loads coal. From 1350, auxiliary gunboat SEIKAI MARU comes alongside and loads coal.
16 May 1942:
From 0600-1630, a harbor vessel comes alongside and loads aviation fuel drums. At 1200, SEIKAI MARU comes alongside.
17 May 1942:
Separates from SEIKAI MARU. From 0630, comes alongside auxiliary transport ship AKIBASAN MARU and loads coal.
18 May 1942:
From 1500, comes alongside AKIBASAN MARU.
19 May 1942:
Separates from AKIBASAN MARU. Embarks one passenger. Departs Rabaul.

KOTOKU MARU receives Second Fleet secret message No. 554 that attaches her to the Combined Fleet as a troop transport for the Third Phase.

Arrives at Sasebo. Anchors at No. 2 buoy. Disembarks one passenger.

KOTOKU MARU departs Sasebo in a convoy consisting of
auxiliary cruiser KINRYU MARU and possibly others escorted by subchaser CH-32.
At 2400, that night CH- 32 is detached.

At 1800, KINRYU MARU is detached.
17 June 1942:
Arrives at Truk. Unloads cargo and the five boats.
19 June 1942:
KOTOKU MARU receives secret message No. 855 that
temporarily reassigns her from the Second Fleet to the Fourth Fleet.

is appointed Supervisor.

and loads equipment. New Supervisor, retired IJN Captain Sato Koichi (35)
arrives. Passengers disembark.
26 June 1942:
Captain Kuribayasi disembarks. From 0800-1800, a harbor
vessel comes alongside and loads equipment.
27 June 1942:
From 0700-1200, a harbor vessel comes alongside and
loads a tank. Embarks 418 passengers. Between 2000-0300, a harbor vessel comes
alongside and loads lumber.
28 June 1942:
From 0500-1900 a harbor vessel comes alongside and loads and loads a wireless radio. KOTOKU MARU transfers two Type 96 triple 25-mm AA guns to auxiliary transport MEIYO MARU to replace her previous dual Type 93 13.2-mm twin MGs, the latter being transferred to KOTOKU MARU.
29 June 1942: “SN” Operation: Establishment of airbases in the South Pacific
Truk. At 1230, KOTOKU MARU is joined by two subchasers of the 21st and 23rd Subchaser Divs. At 1430, test fires the 13.2-mm machine guns discharging 60 rounds.
Later, KOTOKU MARU departs Truk via Bougainville to Guadalcanal carrying airfield construction workers in a convoy also consisting of auxiliary transports AZUMA, AZUMASAN, HOKUROKU, MEIYO, KANTO and MATSUMOTO MARUs escorted by light cruiser YUBARI (F) DesDiv 29’s YUZUKI and OITE, DesDiv 30's UZUKI and DesDiv 34's AKIKAZE. The convoy carries a Special Naval Landing Force (SNLF) and 11th and 13th construction units.
6 July 1942:
Arrives at Lunga Point, Guadalcanal. Disembarks the 11th and 13th construction units. YUBARI is detached and departs for Truk the same day.
9 July 1942:
KOTOKU MARU arrives at Guadalcanal and lands 250 members of the Hara Construction Force and security troops to build Lunga Airfield, Then delivers fifty more construction crewmen to Gavutu to build installations.
19 July 1942:
KOTOKU MARU receives Secret RZJ capture unit order No. 4 that attaches her to the RZJ Eastern New Guinea capture unit’s Landing Ship Division. Her principal duty is to transport 250 Army troops, 150 tons of food
and automobile fuel in three transport movements.
27 July 1942:
Departs Rabaul, New Britain in an unidentified convoy
to resupply Buna and Gona, New Guinea escorted by destroyer YUZUKI.
29 July 1942:
Near Gona, New Guinea. In the afternoon, disembarkation
begins near the village of Basabua. The ships of the convoy are attacked by
seven USAAF Douglas A-24 “Banshee” (Army version of USN SBD) dive bombers of the
3rd Bomb Group, escorted Bell P-39 “Airacobras” of the 41st and 80th Fighter
Squadrons of the 35th Fighter Group from the Port Moresby area. At 1643, KOTOKU
MARU is hit by a bomb from the second wave that damages hatch No. 5. She floods
and takes on a heavy list to starboard, forcing her to disembark 263 troops,
mostly 15th Independent Engineers. They reach shore in motor launches, but the
ship's cargo is unable to be unloaded.
A6M2 "Zekes" of
the Tainan Naval Air Group (Kokutai) attack the A-24s and all but one is shot
down. The P-39’s again prove ineffective against the nimble A6Ms. Several
crewmen are captured, but are executed by the Japanese.
KOTOKU MARU, although damaged, departs the area under reduced power and
returns to Lae late that same day for temporary repairs, then attempts to return
to Buna to unload her cargo.
30 July 1942:
Near Salamaua, New Guinea. At 1651, KOTOKU MARU is
bombed by Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress” heavy bombers of the 19th Bomb Group and
hit by at least three 500 lb bombs that render her unnavigable, but she is run
aground to keep from sinking. Captain Sato is KIA. He is promoted Rear Admiral,
posthumously. Light cruiser TATSUTA and destroyer YUZUKI help rescue survivors
and return them to Rabaul.
Allied coast watchers observe the Japanese performing salvage on the
shipwreck, removing cargo then abandoning the hulk.
10 June 1943:
Removed from the Navy List.
15 July 1944:
After the Allies occupy Salamaua, Australian CALEDONIAN
SALVOR removes winches and other gear from KOTOKU MARU’s wreck. The wreck
remains upright until at least 1945. At some point, the bow section is removed,
cut off or severely damaged.
1970s:
The wreck is still largely intact, resting on its side.
1980s:
Only the stern section is visible above water and the rest of
the wreck has settled in about 80 feet of water.
