MURO MARU was completed for Osaka Shosen (OSK Line) in 1927. In 1938, she was requisitioned by the IJN and converted to a transport. In 1943, she was reconverted to a hospital ship. In Nov '44, MURO MARU was inadvertently sunk by U.S. carrier-based aircraft in Manila Bay. Her sister was auxiliary gunship and later midget submarine depot ship NACHI MARU.
