Launched and named SHINKO MARU.

29 June 1938:
Completed and registered at Shikama, Hyogo Prefecture.

23 October 1938:
Requisitioned by the IJN as a general requisitioned transport.

16 November 1938:
Registered in the IJN as an auxiliary gunboat attached to the Kure Naval District under Navy’s instruction No. 962-23. Reserve Lt Iwata Shinichi assumes command.

Assigned to the 4th Gunboat Division under Navy’s instruction No. 963.

Departs Kure.

Assigned to Vice Admiral Makita Kakusaburo’s (38) Shanghai Special Base Force in Captain (later Rear Admiral) Ohashi Tatsuo’s (40) 14th Gunboat Division also consisting of auxiliary gunboats TOSHO MARU and NISSHO MARU No. 2 under Navy’s instruction No. 1250.

3 December 1941:
At 0900 departs Shipu, China with NISSHO MARU No. 12. Engages in gunnery drill, each gun firing five shots. Arrives back at Shipu later in the day, at 1900.

4 December 1941:
Loads drinking water from IJA transport DAINICHI MARU and later from lighter TOYOKUNI MARU.

6 December 1941:
At 1200 departs Shipu.

8 December 1941:
At 1330 seizes British ship CHEKIANG (ZHEJIANG) at position 28-32N, 122-30E. At 1830 arrives at Taichow (now Taizhou) Islands, China. Assigned that same day to Shanghai District, 8th Vigilance Unit under telegram No. 153.

9 December 1941:
At 0140 departs Taichow Islands and arrives at Shipu later that day at 0750. Hands over CHEKIANG (ZHEJIANG) to auxiliary gunboat NISSHO MARU No. 12. Departs there at 0920 and arrives back at Taichow Islands later in the day at 1400. Seizes British tug MARIE MOLLER (later KYOKKO MARU) towing barge AUTUMNLIGHT.

10 December 1941:
At 0100 departs Taichow Islands. Hands over MARIE MOLLER and AUTUMNLIGHT to auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7. Seized British cargo ship MARY MOLLER (later KAIKO MARU) is handed over by DAIGEN MARU No. 7 and both ships arrive at Fu Du Waterways, China later in the day.

11 December 1941:
At 1030 departs Fu Du Waterways still escorting MARY MOLLER. Both ships arrive at Dinghai, China later in the day where MARY MOLLER is delivered to Japanese forces in port. Fresh food supplied by lighter SENSHO MARU and fresh water supplied by lighter YORUZAKAME MARU.

13 December 1941:
Loads 32-tons of fuel and 13-tons of fresh water from lighter KORYU MARU.

14 December 1941:
At 0720 departs Dinghai and arrives at Taichow Islands later that same day at 1710.

15 December 1941:
At 0800 departs Taichow Islands on gunnery drill and arrives at Zhuyu (Bamboo Island), China later that day at 1720.

16 December 1941:
At 0800 departs Zhuyu. At 1530, joins a convoy consisting of IJA transports TEIYO (ex-German SAARLAND) CALCUTTA and HIBURI MARUs escorted by destroyer HASU and auxiliary gunboat NISSHO MARU No. 12. At 2230, ends convoy’s escort.

17 December 1941:
At 0400 arrives at Bei Ji Shan Archipelago, China. Departs there at 0900, and arrives at Yuet Ching Bay, China at 1300. Water supplied by auxiliary transport (later auxiliary emergency tanker) HOKUAN MARU. Departs there at 1830m and arrives back at Bei Ji Shan Archipelago later in the day at 2230.

18 December 1941:
At 0610 departs Bei Ji Shan Archipelago. At 0800, takes over escort from auxiliary gunboat NISSHO MARU No. 12 of a convoy consisting of IJA transports TOBA and TOTTORI MARUs and auxiliary gunboat TOMITSU MARU. At 1600, ends escort.

19 December 1941:
At 1215, joins escort of a convoy consisting of IJA transports MEIU, TAMON and KOAN MARUs escorted by auxiliary gunboat NISSHO MARU No. 12. At 1330, ends escort. At 1430, escorts a convoy consisting of IJA transports MANJU, TOTAI, YUBAE and SHINGO MARUs. Escort is ended at 1600. At 1610, escorts a convoy consisting of IJA transports HOKKO, ERIE and HOLLAND MARUs. At 1910, ends escort.

20 December 1941:
At 0820 arrives at Yuet Ching Bay.

21 December 1941:
At 0715 departs Yuet Ching Bay and arrives at Qiqu Archipelago at 0755. Departs there on patrol duty and later engages in ASW combat dropping several DCs. Arrives back at Qiqu Archipelago later in the day.

22 December 1941:
At 0730 departs Qiqu Archipelago and calls at Heiniu Bay. Departs there and arrives at Yuet Ching Bay later that day at 1635.

23 December 1941:
At 1100 departs Yuet Ching Bay and arrives at Taichow Islands later that same day at 1630.

24 December 1941:
At 0700 departs Taichow Islands. At 1415, 20 miles NE of Yu Shan Archipelago escorts a convoy consisting of IJA transports KAISHO, GENZAN and MIKASA MARUs. At 1730, escort is taken over by auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7. Arrives at Shipu later in the day at 2230.

25 December 1941:
At 0920 departs Shipu on patrol and returns back there later that day at 1430. Loads drinking water from IJA transport DAINICHI MARU and from lighter TOYOKUNI MARU.

26 December 1941:
At 0400 departs Shipu on convoy escort but cannot meet up with convoy and returns back there later that same day at 1700.

28 December 1941:
Food supplied by civilian storeship BANSHU MARU No. 22. At 1600 departs Shipu and arrives at Fu Du Waterways later in the day.

29 December 1941:
Departs Fu Du Waterways and arrives at Dinghai later that day at 0830.

30 December 1941:
At 0700 departs Dinghai escorting captured ships MARIE MOLLER, MARY MOLLER and AUTUMNLIGHT. The convoy arrives at Wusong, entrance of Shanghai later that day at 2400.

31 December 1941:

At 0300 departs Nantian Bay. At 1330, 25 miles E of Jiu Shan Islands starts escort of a convoy consisting of IJA transports WAKATSU, SHINAI and THAMES MARUs. Later auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7 joins escort. At 1900, ends escort 14 nautical miles SE of Yushan Islands. Arrives N of Taichow Islands later that day at 2150.

11 January 1942:
At 0300 departs N of Taichow Islands waters and arrives at Taichow Islands later in the day at 0915.

12 January 1942:
Provisioned by auxiliary storeship KOSOKU MARU No. 3.

13 January 1942:
At 0800 departs Taichow Islands and arrives at Yuet Ching Bay later that day at 1500.

14 January 1942:
At 1130 departs Yuet Ching Bay and arrives at Songmen Jiao later that same day at 1430. Water supplied by lighter SUZUHEI MARU.

15 January 1942:
At 0900 departs Songmen Jiao and engages in depth charge and ranging training, and junk inspection. Arrives at Yuet Ching Bay later in the day at 1500.

27 January 1942:
At 800 departs Songmen Jiao and arrives at Zhuyu later in the day at 1140. Water supplied by lighter SUZUHEI MARU.

28 January 1942:
At 0750 departs Zhuyu and arrives at Taichow Islands later that day at 1800.

29 January 1942:
At 0400 departs Taichow Islands. At 0730, 15 miles S of Taichow Islands meets up with destroyer HASU and escorts a convoy consisting of IJA transports LISBON, KOFUKU, UME, DURBAN, KAIMEI, KAYO and SHINSEI MARUs, and civilian passenger/cargo ship (C-APK) FUJI MARU. At 1630, escort is taken over by minelayer SOKUTEN and SHINKO MARU No. 1 GO is detached.

30 January 1942:
At 0010 arrives at Taichow Islands. Food supplied by civilian storeship BANSHU MARU No. 22.

31 January 1942:
At 0430 departs Taichow Islands to meet up with convoy consisting of KUWAYAMA MARU and NAGANO MARUs.

1 February 1942:
At 1120 arrives back at Taichow Islands.

3 February 1942:
Supplied with fresh food.

4 February 1942:
At 0700 departs Taichow Islands. Searches for captured Norwegian salvage ship HALLDOR (later HARUTA MARU) and British cargo ship ARGUS (later SHINNAN MARU). Arrives at Shipu later that same day at 1700. Loads fresh water from lighters YOROZUKAME and TOYOKUNI MARUs.

5 February 1942:
At 0700 departs Shipu. Searches for HALLDOR and ARGUS and arrives at Dinghai later in the day at 1400.

6 February 1942:
Loads luggage from civilian cargo ship (C-AK) KATSUYAMA MARU.

8 February 1942:
At 0930 departs Dinghai and arrives at Shipu later that same day at 1610.

9 February 1942:
Water supplied by civilian cargo ship (C-AK) KAIYO MARU and IJA transport DAINICHI MARU. At 0850 departs Shipu and arrives at Taichow Islands at 1400. Departs there to investigate an explosion heard SE of the area and returns back to port later in the day at 1930.

10 February 1942:
At 0700 departs Taichow Islands. Discovers debris of small ship ANBA MARU at position 27-55N, 121-48E. At 1000 joins with DAIGEN MARU No. 7 in a search of the area.

11 February 1942:

At 0500 the three ships depart Sanmen Bay and arrives at Taichow Islands later that day, at 1130. Shells Langji Shan and returns to Taichow Islands later that day. Provisioned by auxiliary storeship BANSHU MARU No. 21.

29 May 1942:
Refueled by lighter KORYU MARU. At 0945 the three ships depart Taichow Islands. Shells Songmen Island and arrives at Yuo You Shan later that same day. Lands 12 raider troops.

30 May 1942:
At 0315, embarks the raiding party. At 0430 departs Yuo You Shan and arrives at Yuet Ching later that same day at 0730. Fires five warning shots.

31 May 1942:
At 0955 departs Yuet Ching and arrives at Yuet Ching Bay later in the day at 1130. At 1800, lands a raiding party.

1 June 1942:
The 2nd Patrol Corps is officially activated under Shanghai District secret instruction No. 108. Assigned to the 1st Raid Corps under instruction No. 1.

2 June 1942:
At 0600 departs Yuet Ching Bay with auxiliary gunboats DAIGEN MARU No. 7 and NISSHO MARU No. 12 and arrives at Yuet Ching at 0710. Supplied with fresh water. At 0600, lands a raiding party. At 0715, fires five warning shots to protect minesweeping party. Fresh food supplied by lighter SENSHO MARU. At 1200, departs Yuet Ching Bay with auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7, arriving at 1430 at Heiniu Bay. At 1850, embarks the raiding party.

4 June 1942:
At 0610 departs Heiniu Bay with auxiliary gunboats TOSHO MARU and DAIGEN MARU No. 7 and calls at Daiyu Bay at 1150. At 1200, lands a raiding party. Troops board the ship at 1540. Departs there at 1730 with the others and arrives at Shagang Port later that same day, at 1845.

5 June 1942:
At 0430, lands a raiding party. At 0600, tethers to rolling anchor. At 1200, Troops board the ship. At 1230, Departs Shagang port. At 1430, fires 10 shells at Jin Shenwei. At 2050, arrives at Yuet Ching Bay.

6 June 1942:

Soon after, off Foochow, the convoy is attacked by USAAF 14th Air Force North American B-25 “Mitchell” medium bombers. IJA transport PANAMA MARU carrying 2,229 men of 82nd and 83rd Infantry regiments, 21st Division, is bombed and sunk at 27-15N, 120-45E. One crewman, two gunners and 12 soldiers are KIA. All equipment as well as 5,034 tons of coal are lost. YASUKUNI and ATSUTA MARUs are damaged. SHINKO MARU No. 1 GO and TSUGA rescue survivors. At 1300, ends escort.

At 1747 arrives at Fuyao Island and departs there searching for IJN requisitioned ship (B-AK) RYUSEI (ex-Chinese Maritime Customs ship LIU HSING) survivors with the assistance of rescue boats No. 1 and No. 6. Returns back to port later that day.

25 January 1944:

At 0800 departs Shipu on ASW patrol with auxiliary patrol boat EBISU MARU and arrives back at Shipu later in the day, at 2145.

2 March 1944:
At 0700 departs Shipu with auxiliary patrol boat EBISU MARU and arrives in Niubi Shan Strait later that day, at 1150.

6 March 1944:
At 0730 departs Niubi Shan Strait and arrives at Shipu later that same day, at 1200. Fresh food supplied by auxiliary storeship BANSHU MARU No. 21.

7 March 1944:
At 0630 departs Shipu and arrives at Dinghai later in the day, at 1210.

10 March 1944:
Fresh water and fresh food supplied by lighter SENSHO MARU.

11 March 1944:
Loads coal.

12 March 1944:
At 0900 departs Dinghai, meets up with auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7 and arrives at Shipu, at 1920.

14 March 1944:
At 0800 departs Shipu with auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7 and auxiliary patrol boat EBISU MARU and and arrives back at Shipu later that day, at 1330.

15 March 1944:
At 1300 departs Shipu with auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7 and auxiliary patrol boat EBISU MARU and arrives in Niubi Shan Strait later that same day, at 1715.

17 March 1944:
At 0700 departs Niubi Shan Strait and arrives at Kinmen Island later in the day, at 1800.

18 March 1944:
At 0730 departs Kinmen Island and arrives in Niubi Shan Strait later that day, at 1520.

20 March 1944:
At 1250 departs Niubi Shan Strait and arrives at Dinghai later that same day, at 1820.

22 March 1944:
At 1000 departs Dinghai and arrives in Niubi Shan Strait later in the day, at 1340.

24 March 1944:
At 0900 departs Niubi Shan Strait with auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7 and arrives at Shipu later that day, at 1345.

At 1330 departs Shipu with auxiliary gunboat DAIGEN MARU No. 7 and arrives in Niubi Shan Strait later that day, at 1645.

3 April 1944:
At 0800 departs Niubi Shan Strait and arrives at Shipu later that same day, at 1210. Fresh food supplied by civilian storeship BANSHU MARU No. 22 and provides water to auxiliary gunboat HOKOKU MARU.

4 April 1944:
At 1200 departs Shipu on ASW patrol and arrives at Dongji Shan later in the day, at 1600.

5 April 1944:
At 0600 departs Dongji Shan on ASW patrol and arrives in Niubi Shan Strait later that day, at 1400.

8 April 1944:
Loads fresh water from IJA transport DAINICHI MARU.

9 April 1944:
At 1030 departs Niubi Shan Strait. Later arrives at Dinghai. Fresh food supplied by auxiliary storeship BANSHU MARU No. 21 and fresh water supplied by IJA transport DAINICHI MARU.

10 April 1944:
Released from the 14th Gunboat Division by internal instruction No. 540. Removed from the Navy’s list under internal instruction No. 541. Registered again that same day as an auxiliary transport (Otsu) category attached to the Kure Naval Base with Kure as home port. Assigned directly to the Navy’s Department. [1]

E May 1944:
Assigned to Admiral Takasu Shiro’s (35) Southwest Fleet.

1944:
Her owners are changed to Minami Nippon Kisen K.K.

3 July 1944:
Departs Sesoko-Jima, NW of Okinawa and arrives at Seso, Kakeroma Island, S Amami-Oshima, Amami Gunto (Archipelago) later in the day.

4 August 1944:
At 0830, departs Takao, Formosa (now Kaohsiung, Taiwan) in convoy MI-13 also consisting of auxiliary oilers SHIMPO and KYOEI MARUs and OGURA MARU No. 2, IJA tankers ATAGO and TEIKON MARUs, IJA shared tankers (A/C-AO) ZUIYO and SHINCHO MARUs, civilian tanker (C-AO) TOKUWA MARU, IJA shared ore carriers (A/C-AC) HIGANE and HIYORI MARUs, civilian ore carrier (C-AC) KOKUSEI MARU, IJA transports DURBAN, KIZAN, URAL, RISSHUN and ATLAS MARUs and SHINSEI MARU No. 1, civilian cargo ship (C-AK) KUNIYAMA MARU and IJN transport T3 escorted by Destroyer ASAKAZE, kaibokan MATSUWA, KUSAGAKI, YASHIRO and CD-14, patrol boat P-38, minesweeper W-18, and auxiliary patrol boats EIFU, FUYO, KASUGA and NUNOBIKI MARUs.

7 August 1944:
Off Capones Island, Luzon. At 2205, LtCdr (later Captain) Enrique D. Haskin's (USNA ’33) USS GUITARRO (SS-363) torpedoes and sinks kaibokan KUSAGAKI at 14-50N, 119-57E. USS GUITARRO survives depth-charging by ASAKAZE and CD-14. 97 of KUSAGAKI's crew are KIA, 30 others drift throughout the night. In the morning, the survivors, including CO LtCdr Ozaki Takashi (60), are rescued by ASAKAZE and taken to Manila.

8 August 1944:
At 0900, the convoy arrives at Manila. SHINKO MARU No. 1 GO is detached as are DURBAN, KIZAN, RISSHUN, KUNIYAMA, SHINKO and ATLAS MARUs.

11 August 1944:
Departs Manila.

12 August 1944:
Arrives at Paluan Bay, Mindoro.

14 August 1944:
Departs Paluan Bay.

18 August 1944:
Arrives at Miri, Borneo.

9 January 1945:
Bantam Bay, E of Bawean Island, Borneo. Ltz 1 (LtCdr) Jacob F. Drijfhout van Hooff's Dutch submarine HMNS O-19, operating under ComSubSoWesPac, is alerted by an "Ultra" signal that a small convoy is steaming eastwards S of Borneo. Just before sunset, a mast appears on the horizon near Tandjung Puting. Van Hooff executes an "end around" to get ahead of the convoy consisting of SHINKO MARU No. 1 GO escorted by subchaser CH-5.

Van Hooff surfaces at sunset and sights a small freighter and an escort. He fires three torpedoes and gets a hit that sinks SHINKO MARU No. 1 GO at 03-41S-111-54E about 11 nautical miles SE of Tandjung Puting with unknown casualties.

1 February 1945:
Removed from the Navy’s list under instruction No. 101.
