E 1911:
Yokohama.Laid down at Uchida Shipyard Co., Ltd. as a 2,933-ton passenger-cargo ship for Nippon Yusen Kaisha, K. K. (NYK) Lines, Tokyo.

16 March 1912:
Launched and named TAIYEI MARU.

18 September 1912:
Completed and placed in NYK’s service.

31 March 1923:
Sold to Kinkai Yusen K. K., Tokyo and renamed TAIEI MARU.

3 August 1937: Second Sino-Japanese War:
Requisitioned by the Imperial Army (IJA). Alloted IJA No. 65.

5 April 1938:
Returned to owners.

1939:
Repurchased by NYK.

9 June 1942:
Chartered and operated by the Civilian Shipping Administration (Senpaku Un´eikai). Arrives at Kasadoshima.

28 September 1942:
Re-requisitioned by the Imperial Army (IJA).

November 1942:
Yokohama. Converted to a cable laying ship at Mitsubishi Zosensho, K. K. shipyard.

1 December 1942:
Arrives at Nagasaki.

31 December 1942:
Arrives at Takao, Formosa.

1 January 1943:
Departs Takao.

23 January 1943:
Arrives at Singapore, Malaya (now Republic of Singaore).

28 January 1943:
Departs Singapore.

5 February 1943:
Arrives at St. Jacques, Vichy French Indochina (Vung Tau, Vietnam).

At 0700, TAIEI MARU departs Miri in convoy MI-12 also consisting of GYOKUYO (OYO), KINRYU, NORFOLK, TAKETOYO, UGA, JUNGEN GO and GYOSAN MARUs and tankers NANSEI, SEISHIN and TAKETOYO MARUs escorted by kaibokan SHIMUSHU, CD-16, CD-28 and CH-41 and subchasers CH-30 and CH-33.

18 August 1944:
At 1352, LtCdr William T. Kinsella's USS RAY (SS-271) torpedoes and sinks NANSEI MARU at 08-39N, 116-39E. The convoy is ordered to seek shelter.

20 August 1944:
At 1930, arrives at Paluan Bay, NW Mindoro, Philippines.

21 August 1944:
At 0556, departs Paluan Bay. Soon after, kaibokan CD-28 attacks an enemy submarine contact. At 0720, a wolfpack consisting of USS GUITARRO, HADDO, HARDER, MUSKALLUNGE and RAY make the first of a series of successful attacks. TAKETOYO MARU is torpedoed and sunk at 13-23N 120-19E and, at 0730, NORFOLK MARU is torpedoed and sunk in the same position. At 0800, KINRYU MARU is torpedoed and sunk and, at 0825, UGA MARU is torpedoed and sunk, both at 13-27N 120-17E.

22 August 1944:
At 2200, arrives at Manila. The convoy is dissolved.

27 August 1944:
Departs Manila.

30 August 1944:
Arrives at Singapore.

5 October 1944:
Departs Singapore.

9 October 1944:
Arrives at Batavia, Java (now Jakarta, Indonesia).

12 October 1944:
Departs Batavia.

17 October 1944:
Arrives at Singapore.

30 December 1944:
Departs Singapore.

3 January 1945:
Arrives at Batavia.

4 January 1945:
Departs Batavia.

11 January 1945:
Arrives at Batavia.

12 January 1945:
Departs Batavia.

16 January 1945:
Arrives at Palembang, Sumatra.

Arrives at Singapore.

23 June 1945:
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues an official notice to all belligerent countries that TAIEI MARU is employed as a hospital ship.

4 August 1945:
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs withdraws the notice that TAIEI MARU is employed as a hospital ship.

15 August 1945:
Singapore. TAIEI MARU is undergoing remodelling to a hospital ship when hostilities cease.

1 December 1945:
Removed from IJA List.

1945:
The U.S. Navy lists TAIEI MARU as a damaged vessel.

1946:
TAIEI MARU is listed as missing in the South Seas.

1950:
NYK sells TAIEI MARU for scrapping.
