Yokohama Maru Class Transport

(YOKOHAMA MARU, prewar)

YOKOHAMA MARU was completed as a passenger/cargo ship for Nippon Yusen Kisen (Japan Mail Line) Kabushiki Kaisha (K.K.)(NYK Line) of Tokyo in 1912.
She saw extensive service in NYK's Guam ~ Japan service. In 1941, she was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Army and converted to an army transport.
She participated in the seizure of Guam and the invasions of Rabaul, New Britain, Kavieng, New Ireland and Lae and Salamuana, New Guinea.
In Mar '42, she was torpedoed and sunk by carrier based USN aircraft off Saramoa, New Guinea.
