26-29 November 1941:

Desdiv 2 steamed with Desron 4 from Terashima Strait to Mako (Pescadores).

7-11 December:

Desdiv 2 departed Mako, then with Vigan (Philippines) invasion force.

22 December:

Desdiv 2 with Lingayen invasion force.

12 January 1942:

Desdiv 2 with Tarakan invasion force.

Desdiv 2 with Balikpapan invasion force.

Desdiv 2 arrived in Subic Bay from Tarakan on 16 March, then assisted in operations to secure the Philippines, including the blockade of Manila and occupation of Cebu.

25 April:
Lieutenant Commander Tomita (to Staff, MLDiv 19) relieved by Lieutenant Commander Kamiyama Masao [51] (prev. C.O. SUZUKAZE).

3-6 May:

Desdiv 2 steamed from Mako to Yokosuka, then docked for repairs.

4-6 June: Battle of Midway

Desdiv 2 escorted Admiral Kondo's Occupation Force Main Body.

16-30 July:

Desdiv 2 steamed with Desron 3 from Kure via Singapore to Mergui (Burma) for Indian Ocean raiding operations, aborted due to Guadalcanal.

8-21 August:

Desdiv 2 steamed from Mergui via Balikpapan to Truk.

24 August: Battle of the Eastern Solomons

Escorted MUTSU.

8-24 September:

Escorted seaplane carrier KUNIKAWA MARU out of Truk, searching Solomons-Santa Cruz Islands for potential seaplane base-sites.

24-27 September:

Steamed from Truk to the Shortlands.

2 October:

Troop transport run to Guadalcanal.

5 October:

Troop transport run to Guadalcanal.

8 October:

Troop transport run to Guadalcanal.

9-10 October:

Steamed from Shortlands to Rabaul.

12-16 October:

Escorted troop convoy to Guadalcanal, then returned to Shortlands.

25 October:

Gunfire support mission to Guadalcanal (Hyakutake offensive), aborted. Assisted bombed YURA, then helped YUDACHI rescue survivors and scuttle.

Briefly joined Admiral Kurita's Support Force, then to the Shortlands same day.

1 November:
Lieutenant Commander Kamiyama promoted to Commander.

12-13 November: First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal

Escorted Admiral Abe's Bombardment Force. Claimed inflicting heavy gunnery damage on enemy cruiser, then escorted KIRISHIMA to the rear. Later joined Admiral Kurita's Support Force, then to Truk on 18 November.

20-22 November:

Steamed from Truk to Rabaul.

23-24 November:

Led transport run to Lae/Salamua, aborted due to air attack.

30 November:

Out of Rabaul to assist damaged SHIRATSUYU.

5-8 December:

Steamed from Rabaul via Kavieng to Truk.

9-14 December:

Steamed from Truk to Yokosuka, then docked for repairs.

5-10 January 1943:

Escorted troopship ASAMA MARU from Yokosuka to Truk.

14-16 January:

Troop transport run from Truk to Wewak.

16-21 January:

Steamed from Wewak to Kavieng and back.

24 January:
Heavy damage:
torpedoed near Wewak by USS WAHOO (SS-238); keel nearly broken; beached in shallow water to avoid sinking.

17-23 February:

Towed alternately by AMATSUKAZE and URAKAZE, assisted by salvage tug OJIMA, from Wewak to Truk; then docked for emergency repairs/fitting of false bow.

21-30 May:

Accompanied convoy from Truk to Yokosuka, then again docked for repairs. (“X” turret removed/replaced by triple 25mm mount during these repairs; Type 22 radar also mounted on foremast.)

1 July:

Desdiv 2 deactivated; designated "Reserve Ship" while under repair in Japan.

1 July-5 November:
Commander Kamiyama (to C.O. SUZUNAMI) relieved; command then rotated among various officers while under repair.

5 November:
Lieutenant Commander Tomita Toshihiko [59] (prev. C.O. OITE) appointed ship's captain.

30 November:

Assigned to Desdiv 27 (SHIGURE, SHIRATSUYU, SAMIDARE), Desron 2, Second Fleet.

4-11 January 1944:

Escorted IRAKO from Yokosuka to Truk.

19 January-15 February:

Escorted tanker convoys from Truk to Tarakan and Balikpapan and back.

17 February:
Minor damage:
in air attacks on Truk, due to near-misses and strafing; two dead.

17-19 February:

Escorted damaged SHIGURE from Truk to Palau; then patrol/escort duties out of that base.

28 March-1 April:

Steamed from Palau to Davao.

5-9 April:

Escorted ATAGO, TAKAO, CHOKAI, MYOKO, HAGURO and NOSHIRO from Davao to Lingga.

11-14 May:

Escorted fleet from Lingga to Tawitawi.

30-31 May:

Desdiv 27 escorted Crudiv 5 from Tawitawi to Davao to take part in Biak troop transport operations.

2-4 June:

Troop transport run to Biak (cover), aborted due to early enemy detection; then to Sorong.

8 June:

Troop transport run to Biak (cover). Sunk: by U.S. Army B-25s due to two direct bomb hits, 30 miles northwest of Cape of Good Hope near Manokwari (00-05 S, 132-45 E); 74 killed, 11 injured. SHIGURE rescued 110 survivors including Lieutenant Commander Tomita, but Comdesdiv 27 (Captain Shirahama Masashichi [49]) killed in action.

10 August 1944:

Removed from Navy List.
