TECHNICAL DATA
Description: Single-engined carrier-borne and land-based dive-bomber
(D3A1 and D3A2) or bomber trainer (D3A2-K). All-metal construction with
fabric-covered control surfaces.
Accommodation: Crew of two in tandem enclosed cockpits.
- Powerplant:
- One Nakajima Hikari 1 nine-cylinder air-cooled radial, rated at
710 hp for take-off and 800 hp at 3,500 m, driving a three-blade metal
propeller (first prototype).
- One Mitsubishi Kinsei 3 fourteen-cylinder air-cooled radial, rated
at 840 hp for take-off and 730 hp at 1,600 m, driving a three-blade metal
propeller (second prototype).
- One Mitsubishi Kinsei 43 fourteen-cylinder air-cooled radial, rated
at 1,000 hp for take-off and 990 hp at 2,800 m, driving a three-blade metal
propeller (early production D3A1 Model 11).
- One Mitsubishi Kinsei 44 fourteen-cylinder air-cooled radial, rated
at 1,070 hp for take-off and 1,080 hp at 2,000 m, driving a three-blade
metal propeller (late production D3A1 Model 11).
- One Mitsubishi Kinsei 54 fourteen-cylinder air-cooled radial, rated
at 1,300 hp for take-off and 1,200 hp at 3,000 m and 1,100 hp at 6,200
m, driving a three-blade metal propeller (D3A2 Model 12, D3A2 Model 22
and D3A2-K Model 12).
- Armament:
- Two forward-firing 7.7 mm Type 97 machine-guns in the engine cowling
and one flexible rear-firing 7.7 mm Type 92 machine-gun.
- Bomb-load: one 250 kg bomb under the fuselage, and two 60 kg bombs
