Ise | Hyuga |
These two perfectly good BBs were converted into a pair of hybrid battleship/carriers after the debacle at Midway. That's what desperation will do to you, because they were practically useless in their new role, and while they were laid up being converted they could have been put to much better use fighting in the Solomons (if there had been three Japanese battleships facing South Dakota (with its faulty circuit breaker) and Washington on the night of Nov. 12, 1942... hmm, what then?) Maybe if the Japanese had simply built a few more real carriers, these two wouldn't have had to end their long careers sporting those embarrassing little flight decks. (Then again, rumor has it that it took all the metal from all the cooking pots in Tokyo to put Amagi in the water -- carriers weren't exactly growing on trees.)
Another cool shot of Ise.
