Completed at Tokyo; assigned same date to Desdiv 10 (KAZAGUMO, MAKIGUMO, YUGUMO). Ship's captain: Commander Yoshida Masayoshi [50] (prev. C.O. ARASHIO). Initially (and most-often thereafter) served as Desdiv 10 flagship.

10 April:

Desdiv 10 (AKIGUMO added this date) assigned to Desron 10, First Air Fleet.

4-5 June: Battle of Midway

Escorted Admiral Nagumo's Striking Force; assisted HIRYU and helped MAKIGUMO rescue survivors.

With YUGUMO, AKIGUMO, SAMIDARE and SATSUKI, escorted troop convoy (Hansa No. 1: No. 1 Shinsei Maru, Momoyama Maru, Yasushima Maru, Oyo Maru, Aso Maru, Teiryu Maru, Sydney Maru, lifting units of 20
th Division) from Palau to Hansa Bay; then with YUGUMO and SATSUKI to Rabaul on 14 March.

19 March:

Transport run to Tuluvu (New Britain).

24-31 March:

Escorted convoys between Rabaul and Shortlands.

1 April:

Troop transport run from Shortlands to Kolombangara.

Transport run to Buka. Medium damage: en route back to Shortlands on 3 April, struck mine in Kahili Bay. Comdesdiv 10 (Captain Yoshimura) transferred to YUGUMO.

Alongside repair ship HAKKAI MARU at Rabaul.

18-28 April:

Steamed from Rabaul via Truk to Japan, then docked for repairs.

10-13 June:

Desdiv 10 (YUGUMO, KAZAGUMO, AKIGUMO) steamed from Yokosuka to Paramushiro.

7-17 July:

Initial troop evacuation run to Kiska, aborted due to weather.

22 July-1 August:

Second troop evacuation run to Kiska, successful on 29 July. With ABUKUMA, KISO, and five other destroyers, assigned to transport unit. KAZAGUMO removed 478 evacuees.

3-6 August:

Desdiv 10 escorted MAYA from Paramushiro to Yokosuka.

7-11 September:

With URAKAZE and SAMIDARE, escorted TAIYO and CHUYO from Japan to Truk.

14 September:
Commander Yoshida (later Comdesdiv 41) relieved by Commander Hashimoto Kanematsu [55] (prev. C.O. SHIRATSUYU).

18-20 September:

Escorted fleet from Truk to Eniwetok in response to U.S. carrier raids in the Central Pacific.

Steamed from Eniwetok to Rabaul.

11-14 November:

Escorted CHOGEI from Rabaul to Truk.

20 November-7 December:

Escorted supply group for fleet operating in Marshalls-area, then returned to Truk.

12-17 December:

With AKIGUMO and TANIKAZE, escorted SHOKAKU and YAMATO from Truk to Japan, then docked at Yokosuka for maintenance and refitting. Types 13 and 22 radars probably mounted during this refit.

6-13 February 1944:

Escorted SHOKAKU and ZUIKAKU from Kure to Singapore.

20 February-15 March:

Escorted ZUIKAKU from Singapore to Kure (27 February-8 March) and back.

12-15 May:

Escorted fleet from Lingga to Tawitawi.

30-31 May:
With KAZAGUMO, escorted FUSO from Tawitawi to Davao.

2-5 June:
With KAZAGUMO, escorted FUSO from Davao to support Biak troop transport operations (aborted), then returned to Davao.

7-8 June:
Departed Davao escorting MYOKO and HAGURO to support Biak troop transport operations. Sunk: torpedoed by USS HAKE (SS-256) at mouth of Davao Bay (06-03 N, 124-57 E). ASAGUMO rescued 133 survivors, including Commander Hashimoto (to C.O.HATSUZUKI), but Comdesdiv 10 (Captain Akazawa Shizuo [49]) was killed in action.

10 July 1944:

Removed from Navy List.
