Initial Command Structure:
Ship's captain: Lieutenant Commander Yamagami Kamesaburou [55] (prev. C.O. KISARAGI). Assigned to Desdiv 1 (KAMIKAZE, NAMIKAZE, NUMAKAZE, NOKAZE), Ominato Guard District.

4 December 1941:
Departed Ominato, then Hokkaido-Kuriles patrol/escort duties.

25 May 1942:
Participated in Aleutians Islands attack operations.

1 October:
Departed Ominato, escorting convoy to (northern Japan).

15 November:
Lieutenant Commander Yamagami (to C.O. SHIGURE) relieved by Lieutenant Commander Koeu Keiji [57] (prev. C.O. HARUKAZE). On same date, departed Ominato, escorting convoy to Attu.

16 February 1943:
Arrived Ominato for repairs.

25 February:
Departed Ominato, then Hokkaido-area convoy escort duties.

15 May:
Attached to Fifth Fleet for Kiska evacuation.

2 June:
Lieutenant Commander Koeu (later final C.O. YUKIKAZE) relieved by Lieutenant Commander Yamashita Takayoshi [61].

6 June:
Medium damage:
in collision with SHIRAKUMO during antisubmarine sweep in heavy fog; then to Kataoka Bay for emergency repairs.

17 June-11 September:
At Ominato for repairs.

12 September:
Departed Ominato, then Kuriles-area convoy escort duties.

3 December:
Arrived Moji.

5 December:
Assigned to 1st Surface Escort Division; departed Moji same date escorting convoy to Formosa.

18 December:
Sunk:
torpedoed by USS GRAYBACK (SS-208) 50 miles east-northeast of Naha, Okinawa (26-29 N, 128-26 E). Lost with all hands, including Comdesdiv 1 (Commander Watanabe Yasumasa [49]).

5 February 1944:
Removed from Navy List.
