Led troop transport/evacuation run to Buka (cover). Sunk: by torpedoes of USS CHARLES AUSBURNE (DD-570), USS CLAXTON (DD-571) and USS DYSON (DD-572), 55 miles east-southeast of Cape St. George (05-15 S, 153-49 E). Blew up and sank with all hands, including Comdesdiv 31 (Captain Kagawa Kiyoto [46]). Commander Kikkawa (C.O. OSHIO at Bali and C.O. YUDACHI at Guadalcanal) was posthumously promoted two ranks, the only IJN destroyer skipper so honored.
