28 November-21 December 1941:

Departed Tateyama with USHIO and tanker SHIRIYA, on 7 December bombarded Midway Atoll, then returned to Saeki.

12-17 January 1942:

Desdiv 7, with ARIAKE and YUGURE, escorted HIRYU and SORYU from Hashirijima to Palau.

21-28 January:

Desdiv 7 (minus AKEBONO), with ARIAKE and YUGURE, escorted HIRYU and SORYU out of Palau for air strikes on Ambon.

29 January-25 February:

Desdiv 7 escorted NACHI and HAGURO out of Davao in support of Ambon, Makassar and Timor invasion forces; then to Makassar.

27 February: Battle of the Java Sea

In surface action with Allied cruiser-destroyer group.

2 March:

With USHIO, steamed from Truk to the Shortlands.

Transport run to Guadalcanal: with USHIO, towed barges loaded with food and ammunition to Kamimbo.

13-14 September:

Gunfire support mission to Guadalcanal (Kawaguchi offensive): with USHIO, FUBUKI and SUZUKAZE, one of four destroyer units rotating on interdiction patrols off Guadalcanal to lend support and “cut off enemy retreat.”

17 September:

Transport run to Guadalcanal: with AMAGIRI, carried food and medical supplies to Kamimbo.

20 September:

Transport run to Guadalcanal: with USHIO, YUDACHI and SHIKINAMI (each towing a barge), carried munitions transferred from NISSHIN to Kamimbo.

22 August:

Troop evacuation run to Rekata (cover), aborted due to suspected enemy presence.

26 August:

With SENDAI, troop evacuation run to Rekata (cover).

28 August:

With SENDAI, troop transport run (carrying Rekata evacuees) from Rabaul to the Shortlands.

29 August-1 September:

Aircrew (ground-support units of Cardiv 2) transport run from Rabaul via Kavieng to Truk.

6-11 September:

With AKEBONO, escorted UNYO from Truk to Yokosuka, then docked for repairs.

12-20 September:
While at Yokosuka, 13mm machine guns on bandstand forward of bridge replaced by twin 25mm. Details of further modifications, if any (including radar and “X” turret removal), unknown.

4-10 October:

With SHIMAKAZE, escorted CHUYO from Yokosuka to Truk.

15-20 October:
Escorted CHUYO from Truk to Yokosuka.

27 October-1 November:
With USHIO, escorted CHUYO from Yokosuka to Truk.

With AKEBONO, escorted ZUIHO and UNYO from Yokosuka to Truk.

22-24 December:

With AKEBONO, steamed from Truk to Rabaul.

26 December:

With AKEBONO, transport run to Qavuvu. Among nine destroyers to deliver total of 635 men and 380 tons of supplies there between 22-31 December.

30 December:

With AKEBONO, transport run to Qavuvu. (As 26 December above)

1 January 1944:

Desdiv 7 reassigned to Desron 1, Fifth Fleet.

10 January:
Relief of Lieutenant Commander Suga (to C.O. AMATSUKAZE) by Lieutenant Commander Hashimoto Masao [56] (prev. C.O. FUYO) ordered but never realized due to SAZANAMI's sinking and Suga's death with her. (Lieutenant Commander Hashimoto to C.O. SHIRAKUMO instead.)

12-14 January:

With AKEBONO, departed Rabaul to join tanker convoy en route from Palau to Truk. Sunk: torpedoed by USS ALBACORE (SS-218) 300 miles southeast of Yap (05-15 N, 141-15 E). Two torpedo hits caused ship to break-up and sink in under three minutes with 153 dead, including Lieutenant Commander Suga; 89 survivors rescued by AKEBONO.

10 March 1944:

Removed from Navy List.
