Initial Command Structure:
Ship's captain: Commander Iwagami Juichi [50] (prev. C.O. YAKAZE). Assigned to Desdiv 19 (URANAMI, SHIKINAMI, AYANAMI, ISONAMI), Desron 3, First Fleet.

20-26 November:

Desdiv 19 steamed with Desron 3 from Kure to Samah (Hainan).

4 December 1941-11 January 1942:

Escorted troop convoys out of Samah and Camranh Bay in Malaya invasion operations.

January-February:

Escorted RYUJO in air strikes against Allied shipping in the Java Sea and Bangka Strait.

28 February-1 March: Battle of Sunda Strait:

Entered battle late; put final torpedo into USS HOUSTON (CA-30) to sink ship. Minor damage: due to near-miss: prop damaged, best speed temporarily reduced to 24 knots.

March:

Escorted troop convoys from Saigon via Singapore to Rangoon; then to Singapore on 6 April.

13-22 April:

Steamed from Singapore via Camranh Bay to Kure, then docked for maintenance.

15 April 1942:
Commander Iwagami (to C.O. HAGIKAZE) relieved by Lieutenant Commander Kawahashi Akifumi [54] (prev. C.O. NOKAZE).

4-5 June: Battle of Midway:

Desdiv 19 escorted Admiral Yamamoto's Main Body.

30 June-2 July:

Escorted troop convoy from Kure to Amami-O-Shima, then antisubmarine patrolling there.

17-31 July:

Steamed from Amami-O-Shima via Mako, Singapore and Sabang to Mergui (Burma) for Indian Ocean raiding operations, aborted due to Guadalcanal.

8-21 August:

Escorted tankers NIPPON MARU and KYOKUTO MARU from Mergui via Makassar and Tarakan to join fleet north of the Solomons.

24 August: Battle of Eastern Solomons:

Escorted fleet supply group; then to Rabaul on 29 August.

30 August-1 September:

Escorted SENDAI from Rabaul to Shortlands.

1 September:

Troop transport run to Guadalcanal.

4 September:

Troop transport run to Guadalcanal: With URANAMI and ARIAKE (and a second section of YUDACHI, HATSUYUKI and MURAKUMO) landed about 1,000 soldiers of Ichiki and Aoba Detachments at Taivu.

6 September:

Attack mission to Guadalcanal: With URANAMI, YUDACHI and ARIAKE, sent to attack enemy convoy off Guadalcanal; unable to locate, shelled airfield instead.

8 September:

12 September:

Escorted NISSHIN from Truk via Rabaul and Saipan to Kure, then docked for repairs.

27 December 1942-3 January 1943:
While at Kure, twin 13mm machine guns added on bandstand forward of bridge.

7-15 January:

Escorted troop convoy (3rd section of HEI No. 1: JUZAN MARU and SHINKYO MARU, lifting elements of 20th Division) from Pusan to Palau.

19-27 January:

Continued escort of same convoy from Palau to Wewak and back.

28-30 January:

Steamed from Palau to Truk.

31 January-9 February:

Escorted fleet patrolling out of Truk north of the Solomons to cover the Guadalcanal evacuation.

11-14 February:

Escorted CHOGEI from Truk to Rabaul.

18-21 February:

Escorted aircraft transport GOSHU MARU from Rabaul to Gasmata and back.

25 February:

Desdiv 19 reassigned to 1st Surface Escort Division, Southwest Area Fleet.

1-4 March: Battle of the Bismarck Sea:

Escorted troop convoy from Rabaul towards Lae. On 3 March weathered air attacks without damage. Removed Rear Admiral Kimura Masatomi [41] (Comdesron 3) and other survivors from sinking SHIRAYUKI, then assisted in rescuing survivors of other sunken ships, then carried them via Kavieng to reach Rabaul on 5 March.

7-10 March:

Troop transport run from Rabaul via Shortlands to Kolombangara and back.

11-17 March:

Steamed from Rabaul via Saipan to Kure, then docked for repairs.

9-18 April:

Escorted NISSHIN from Kure via Davao to Surabaya.

15 April:

Desdiv 19 reassigned directly to Southwest Area Fleet.

28 April-31 May:

Escorted convoys from Surabaya to western New Guinea and back.

20 June:
Commander Kawahashi (to C.O. ARIAKE) relieved by Lieutenant Commander Michiki Shozo [57] (prev. C.O. SHIOKAZE).

25 December 1943-20 January 1944:

Escorted convoys from Surabaya via Tarakan, Balikpapan and Cape St. Jacques to Singapore.

23-31 January:

Accompanied AOBA, OI, KINU and KITAKAMI on troop transport run to the Andamans; on 27 January assisted torpedoed KITAKAMI, then escorted KINU towing KITAKAMI back to Singapore.

27 February-18 March:

Escorted AOBA, TONE and CHIKUMA from Singapore into Indian Ocean for raiding operation; awaited their return at Batavia 3-14 March; then back to Singapore.

18 March-26 April:

Docked at Singapore for maintenance. 13mm machine guns on bandstand forward of bridge and abreast forward funnel replaced by twin 25mm.

1 April:
Lieutenant Commander Michiki relieved by Lieutenant Commander Takahashi Tatsuhiko [61] (prev. C.O. WAKATAKE).

28-30 April:

Escorted convoy from Singapore to Surabaya.

2-11 May:

Transport run from Surabaya via Ambon, Biak and Menado to Tarakan.

13-17 May:

Escorted AOBA and OI from Tarakan via Davao to Palau.

19-22 May:

Accompanied AOBA and OI on transport run from Palau to Sorong and back.

23-27 May:

Accompanied AOBA and OI on transport run from Palau to Sorong, then via Batjan to Tarakan.

27-30 May:

Escorted OI from Tarakan to Balikpapan; then returned to Tarakan.

31 May-1 June:

Escorted AOBA and KINU from Tarakan via Zamboanga to Davao to take part in Biak troop transport operations.

2 June:

Troop transport run to Biak, aborted due to early enemy detection; then to Sorong on 4 June.

8 June:

As flagship of Comcrudiv 16 (Rear Admiral Sakonju Naomasa [40]), led troop transport run to Biak, aborted due to enemy interception. Minor damage: in air attacks due to strafing: burning depth charges jettisoned, two dead and four wounded; later engaged Allied cruiser-destroyer group; then via Sorong to Batjan on 11 June.

23 June-12 July:

Escorted convoys from Menado via Davao, Tarakan, Balikpapan and Surabaya to Singapore.

12-16 July:

Steamed from Singapore via Brunei to Manila.

18-22 July:

Departed Manila, escorting OI; on 19 July rescued survivors of torpedoed OI; then via Cape St. Jacques to Singapore.

22-29 July:
While at Singapore for maintenance, 10 single 25mm machine guns added along length of ship.

6-12 September:

Departed Singapore, escorting Convoy HI-72 bound for Japan. Sunk: torpedoed by USS GROWLER (SS-215) 240 miles south of Hong Kong (18-16 N, 114-40 E). Eight officers and 120 men rescued by MIKURA, but Lieutenant Commander Takahashi killed in action.

10 October 1944:

Removed from Navy List.
