27 July 1943:
Completed at Tokyo; assigned same date to Desron 11, First Fleet, for training. Ship's captain: Commander Kamiyama Masao [51] (prev. C.O. HARUSAME).

20 August:

Assigned to Desdiv 32 (HAYANAMI, FUJINAMI, SUZUNAMI), Desron 11, First Fleet.

30 September:

Desdiv 32 reassigned to Desron 2, Second Fleet.

15-20 October:

With TATSUTA, FUJINAMI and HAYANAMI, escorted YAMASHIRO and ISE on troop transport operation from Saeki to Truk.

22-24 October:

With FUJINAMI and HAYANAMI, accompanied TATSUTA on troop transport run from Truk to Ponape and back.

26-28 October:

With HAYANAMI, troop transport run from Truk to Ponape and back.

3-7 November:

Departed Truk, escorting Admiral Kurita's heavy cruiser group toward Rabaul, but detached with CHOKAI on 4 November to assist damaged tanker NISSHO MARU, then escorted back to Truk.

7-10 November:

Steamed from Truk to Rabaul.

11 November:
Sunk:
in U.S. carrier air raid on Rabaul. Reportedly took direct bomb hit while loading torpedoes near mouth of Rabaul Harbor (04-13 S, 152-11 E); blew up and sank; 148 killed, including Commander Kamiyama.

5 January 1944:

Removed from Navy List.
