The Ko-Hyoteki (Target A) Hei Gata (Type C ) class was an improved version of the Type A midget submarine. The Type C class was equipped with a diesel generator to recharge their batteries and for use in running on the surface. In short bursts of speed, the Type C class could reach almost 19 knots submerged. They carried two bow 17.7-inch torpedoes. 47 boats were completed before the end of the war, but only 15 saw action from bases in Okinawa and the Philippines.
The only known surviving Type C midget submarine was recovered in 1944 from shallow water off Guam. It was displayed at Camp Dealey, Guam since 1945. In 2002, under contract by COMNAVMARIANAS, the midget submarine was completely refurbished and is now again on display at Guam.
