Initial Command Structure:
Ship's Captain: Lieutenant Commander Yamashita Masao [52]. Assigned to Desdiv 29 (OITE, HAYATE, ASANAGI, YUNAGI), Desron 6, Fourth Fleet.

29 November-3 December 1941:
Desdiv 29 steamed with Desron 6 from Truk to Kwajalein.

8-10 December:
With ASANAGI (2nd section, Desdiv 29), departed Kwajalein, then with Gilbert Islands invasion forces.

23 December:
With second Wake Island invasion force.

31 December 1941-3 January 1942:
Desdiv 29 escorted convoy from Kwajalein to Truk, then patrol/escort duties out of that base.

13-15 January:
With YUBARI and YAYOI, Desdiv 29 escorted KIYOKAWA MARU, two transports and one auxiliary from Truk to join Rabaul invasion force near Mereyon (Woleai).

20 January:
En route with Rabaul invasion force, reconnoitered Mussau Island.

23 January:
With Rabaul invasion force, then patrol/escort duties out of that base.

9 February:
With Gasmata (New Britain) invasion force.

8 March:
With Lae/Salamua invasion force. Medium damage: in air attacks on 10 March due to strafing; 29 dead, 38 wounded; then to Rabaul on 12 March for emergency repairs.

22-25 March:
Escorted YUBARI from Rabaul to Truk.

26 March-1 April:
Steamed from Truk via Saipan to Sasebo, then docked for repairs.

15 April:
Lieutenant Commander Yamashita (to C.O. SUZUKAZE) relieved by Lieutenant Okada Seiichi [60].

6 June-14 July:
Departed Moji, escorting convoys via the Philippines and Palau to Rabaul; then patrol/escort duties out of that base.

10 July:
Desron 6 deactivated; Desdiv 29 reassigned to 2nd Surface Escort Division, Fourth Fleet.

26 July:
Troop transport run to Buna.

8-9 August: Battle of Savo Island
Detached from cruiser force as picket at beginning of battle; probably engaged USS JARVIS (DD-393) and received fire from USS CHICAGO (CA-29) without damage. Rejoined cruiser force during withdrawal.

12-15 August:
Escorted troop convoy from Rabaul to Buna and back.

17-19 August:
Escorted Crudiv 6 from Kavieng to Rekata, then patrolling out of that base.

28 August:
Departed Rabaul for Truk, then Central Pacific convoy escort duties.

1 November:
Lieutenant Okada promoted to Lieutenant Commander.

18 March 1943:
Arrived Sasebo, then docked for refitting.

1 April:
Desdiv 29 deactivated; reassigned directly to Eighth Fleet.

23 May:
Lieutenant Commander Okada (to C.O. HATAKAZE) relieved by Lieutenant Commander Kashima Masanori [58] (prev. C.O. HAKAZE).

11 June:
Departed Sasebo for Rabaul, then patrolling and transport duties out of that base.

27 June:
Troop transport run to Kolombangara.

2-3 July:
With YUBARI and MIKAZUKI, cover force for Rendova bombardment mission.

4-5 July:
Troop transport run to Kolombangara, aborted when U.S. ships were encountered. Contributed torpedoes to spread that sank USS STRONG (DD-467).

9 July:
Troop transport run to Kolombangara. With SATSUKI, MATSUKAZE and MIKAZUKI, landed 1,200 troops and 85 tons of supplies at Vila.

12 July: Battle of Kolombangara
Troop transport run to Kolombangara. Landed troops during battle so saw no action.

17 July:
Medium damage:
in U.S. air raid on Shortlands due to near-miss: damage to hull and armament.

30 July-2 August:
Escorted KUNIKAWA MARU and HAKUSAN MARU from Rabaul to Truk, then repairs.

2 October:
Troop evacuation run to Kolombangara (cover).

9 October:
Troop transport run to Buka.

20 October:
Lieutenant Commander Kashima relieved by Lieutenant Commander Furukawa Tameo [60] (prev. C.O. NAGATSUKI).

21 October:
Troop transport run to Cape Dampier.

Troop transport run to Garove Island and Iboki, aborted due to Bougainville landings.

1 November:
Troop transport run to Bougainville, aborted due to strength of enemy forces offshore.

5 November:
Lieutenant Commander Furukawa relieved by Lieutenant Commander Iwabuchi Goro [61] (prev. C.O. MOCHIZUKI).

6 November:
Cape Torokina counter-landing: troop transport run to Bougainville.

22 November:
With AKIKAZE, transport run to Qavuvu.

25 November:
With FUMIZUKI and AKIKAZE, troop transport run to Cape Dampier.

27 November:
With AKIKAZE, transport run to Qavuvu.

29 November:
With AKIKAZE, transport run to Qavuvu.

Minor damage:
(details unknown) due to air attack in Steffen Strait.

With MATSUKAZE, troop transport run to Qavuvu. Among nine destroyers to deliver total of 635 men and 380 tons of supplies there between 22-31 December.

With MATSUKAZE, troop transport run to Qavuvu. (As 25 December above)

25 January 1944:
Arrived Sasebo, then docked for repairs and refitting.

3-24 March:
Escorted troop convoys from Pusan via Yokosuka to Saipan and Truk; then continued Central Pacific convoy escort duties.

15-23 April:
Escorted troop convoy from Tokyo to Saipan.

1 May:
Assigned to Desdiv 22 (SATSUKI, MINAZUKI), Desron 3, Central Pacific Area Fleet.

28 May:
Departed Sasebo, escorting convoy to the Philippines; then Philippines-area convoy escort duties.

16-18 June:
Escorted NATORI from Davao via Palau to join Admiral Ozawa's supply forces in the Philippine Sea.

19-20 June: Battle of the Philippine Sea
Escorted 1st Supply Force.

23 June-17 July:
Arrived Guimarras, then escorted tanker convoys via Manila to Kure; en route assisted and removed oil from torpedoed tanker ITSUKUSHIMA MARU at Negros Island.

18 July:
Desron 3 reassigned to Combined Fleet.

10-18 August:
Escorted Convoy HI-71 from Moji via Mako towards Manila, but detached to Takao with torpedoed EIYO MARU.

21-25 August:
Departed Takao, escorting convoy to Manila. Sunk: torpedoed by USS PICUDA (SS-382) 20 miles north-northeast of Cape Bojeador, Luzon (18-46 N, 20-46 E). 32 killed, 19 wounded; Lieutenant Commander Iwabuchi (to C.O. KAYA) among 202 survivors rescued by CD No. 35.

6 October 1944:
Removed from Navy List.
